5. Interfaith Prayer Ceremony in Commemoration of the Centennial of the Lynching of Ell Persons at 5404 Summer Avenue, May 21: In a month of festivals and music, something more sober. The Lynching Sites Project of Memphis is placing a marker at the site of the 1917 lynching of Persons, accused, without evidence, of rape and murder, and abducted before his trial for a particularly brutal and monstrous public lynching, one that made national news at the time but which was mostly forgotten for decades.
