LSP Monday Meeting

Our Monday Aug. 14 meeting will take place at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library which is located at 3030 Poplar Ave. Memphis, TN 38111.  Our meeting will take place in the Memphis Room, which is on the 4th floor of the library.  Library History Department manager, Wayne Dowdy, will be our speaker and will talk to us about Mary Morrison, who in 1905 refused to sit in the black section of a street car, and the legal battle than ensued.

Our August 28 meeting will take place at First Baptist Church Memphis which is located at 200 East Parkway North, Memphis, TN 38112.  Dr. Timothy Huebner, Rhodes professor, will be speaking to us about Nathan Bedford Forrest’s career as a slave trader in Memphis during the 1850s.  He will also detail his work with Rhodes students to present this story clearly and accurately through a new marker to be placed at the site of Forrest’s slave mart.

Equity, equality, racism, prejudice, bias, justice...

Each of these words carry incredible weight and in some instances, guilt and pain.  Each of these words have a history and each of us have a relationship with these words.  While some find it very easy to discuss these concepts, others are put on guard when these words and concepts become the topic of discussion.  Most, however, recognize that if we are to make a breakthrough for our communities to be effective and thrive for ALL residents, we must deal with these words.
