The new Cold Cases Law passed earlier this year by the Tennessee State Legislature creates and empowers a new Special Joint Legislative Committee to look into unsolved civil rights cases from the past. Getting this law passed has taken years, an the person most responsible for getting it passed is Rep. Johnnie Turner, Due to her efforts and her collaboration across the aisle with Republican Majority Leader, Sen. Mark Norris of Collierville. Hearings on some cases have already begun. One of the early witnesses to appear before the new committee was Charlie Morris, the half-brother of Jesse Lee Bond who was lynched in Arlington in 1939 and whose story the LSP has been working on for over a year. The new law adds new opportunities and crucial support for the Lynching Sites Project.
Rep. Turner is a long-time community leader in Memphis. In the legislature she serves on the Transportation Committee and the Education Administration and Planning Committee. She has received numerous awards and honors including the Living Legends Award from the Memphis Grizzlies and the National Civil Rights Museum, and has been named among the 100 Most Influential Movers and Shakers in Memphis numerous times by Memphis Magazine.
